Men's Volleyball Ends Losing Streak With 3-1 Win in Staten Island

The men's volleyball team snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating the College of Staten Island, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 25-16), on Thursday night in Staten Island, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 9-14 on the season and 2-4 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Dolphins drop to 5-11 and 2-3 in CUNYAC. 

Junior Juan DeJesus led John Jay with a game-high 17 kills, five digs, and two aces. Freshman Edwin Hernandez recorded a career-high and game-high 14 kills and four digs. Freshman Steven Alvarado dished out a game-high 44 assists to go along with five digs and four kills. Freshman Krystian Surdel registered 10 kills and seven digs. Freshman Godwin Sequiera added a game-high 14 digs. Junior Alexander Santana and freshman Kellvin Ortiz finished with seven kills apiece. 

With the Bloodhounds trailing 3-2 in the first set, John Jay went on an 8-2 run to lead 10-5. CSI responded on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 11-11. Staten Island then took a 14-13 advantage but the Bloodhounds followed on an 8-2 run to go ahead 21-16. John Jay ended up take the opening set, 25-23. The second set went back-and-forth as CSI led 7-4. The hosts scored four straight points to go up 11-6. The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to 13-9 but four straight points put Staten Island back up by eight. John Jay made a late comeback but lost the second set, 25-22. 

In the third, the hosts held a 11-7 advantage. Trailing by three, the Bloodhounds picked up six straight points to take a 16-13 lead. John Jay ended the set on a 7-2 run to lead two sets to one. Early on in the fourth, the Bloodhounds took an early 5-2 advantage. Later on in the set, John Jay increased its lead to 13-7. The Bloodhounds ended the game on a 7-3 run to win the final set by a score of 25-16. 

John Jay totaled 59 kills, 48 assists, six aces, and 46 digs.
