The baseball team dropped its first two conference games of the season to Lehman College, 9-6 and 10-8, on Friday afternoon in the Bronx. The Bloodhounds fall to 1-9 on the year and 0-2 in CUNYAC. The Lightning improve to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
In game one, Lehman scored three runs in both the first and second innings to lead 6-0 after two. In the top of the third, senior
Dylan Laudano picked up an RBI single and senior
R.J. Davila knocked in a run. An error on the play brought home two more runs as John Jay trailed 6-4. Lehman increased its lead to 7-4 but in the top of the fourth, junior
Brian Garcia smacked an RBI double to cut the deficit to one. The Lightning scored two insurance runs in the sixth. John Jay loaded the bases in the final frame but Laudano lined out to third to end the game.
Junior
Zach Hyde recorded his 100th career hit in the sixth inning. Garcia and Laudano both finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Senior
Jason Gonzalez picked up two hits and sophomore
Brandon Thomas drew three walks. Junior
Christian Rodriguez got the start and threw four innings. Freshman
Sean Napier pitched the final two.
In game two, the Bloodhounds got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Davila registered an RBI single. In the top of the third, John Jay plated four runs. Hyde and Garcia had an RBI each and Laudano smacked a two-run homer to put the Bloodhounds up 5-0. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lightning scored seven runs to take their first lead of the contest. John Jay tacked on a run in the fifth on an RBI by senior
Charlee Rodriguez. In the sixth inning, Hyde blasted a two-run homer to give the Bloodhounds an 8-7 lead. However, in the bottom of the frame, Lehman hit a two-out three-run homer to lead and eventually win by a final score of 10-8.
Laudano went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Hyde was 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a run. Garcia and sophomore
Jurrel Diaz scored two runs each. Freshman
Jared Hershfield got the nod and pitched 2.2 innings. Sophomore
Marco Alonso threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Freshman
Danny Wynne came in for the final two innings.
The Bloodhounds close out the three-game series against Lehman on Saturday, March 25, with first pitch at 12:30 pm at Fordham University.
