Baseball Completes Comeback At US Merchant Marine Academy

The baseball team defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), 9-8, on Thursday afternoon in Kings Point, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 3-9 on the year. The Mariners drop to 4-9 overall.

The hosts jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two full innings. In the top of the third, junior Zach Hyde drove in sophomore Brandon Thomas to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Mariners responded with two in the bottom of the inning. However, John Jay responded when senior R.J. Davila recorded an RBI double. He later scored on a wild pitch to trim the lead to 6-5. USMMA added a run in the fifth to lead by two.

In the top of the seventh, senior Dyland Laudano laced a two-out two-run single to tie the game. In John Jay's next frame with runners on first and second, sophomore Jurrel Diaz smoked a double to drive in both runners to give the Bloodhounds their first lead of the game. In the bottom of the ninth, the Mariners scored one but junior Christian Rodriguez came in to retire the final batter and record the save.

Hyde finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, run, and two stolen bases. Diaz was 1-for-2 with two RBI's, two walks, and a run scored. Laudano picked up a pair of RBI's. Davila and sophomore C.J. Meyer both finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman Danny Wynne registered the victory after throwing 2.2 innings.

The Bloodhounds host the College of Staten Island on Saturday, April 1, for a CUNYAC doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm on the campus of Staten Island.
