The baseball team split a doubleheader with the College of Staten Island on Sunday afternoon for their first win against the Dolphins since 2012. The Bloodhounds took the first game by a score of 11-4 before dropping game two, 6-2. John Jay is now 4-10 on the season and 2-3 in CUNYAC play.
In game one, the Dolphins scored a run in the top of the first. Starting pitcher
Christian Rodriguez would settle down and not allow any runs through the next five innings. In the bottom of the second, the Bloodhounds plated six runs. With the bases loaded, sophomore Brandon Thomas was hit by a pitch and junior
Zach Hyde followed with an RBI infield single. Junior
Brian Garcia then blasted a bases-clearing triple over the right fielders head. He later scored on an RBI ground out by senior
Dylan Laudano.
In the bottom of the third, freshman
Sean Napier drove in two runs with an RBI double down the left field line. Napier would then score on an RBI double by
Dylan Laudano as John Jay led 9-1. In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore
Jurrel Diaz and freshman
Joe Desilvio picked up RBI's. CSI scored three in the top of the seventh but the Bloodhounds held on for a 11-4 win.
Rodriguez pitched a complete game to record his second win of the season. The junior allowed five hits, four runs (two earned), five walks, and struck out three. Senior
R.J. Davila went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Brian Garcia finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple, three RBI's, and a run. Hyde and sophomore
C.J. Meyer both went 2-for-4.
In game two, Staten Island scored all of its six runs in the first three innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Garcia doubled in Hyde and later scored on an RBI single by senior
Charlee Rodriguez. Junior
Joe Gregory got the start and pitched 2.2 innings. Freshman
Danny Wynne (2.2 IP) and senior
Charles Mendes (1.2 IP) recorded the final 13 outs without giving up a run. Hyde was 2-for-3 with a triple and Rodriguez finished 2-for-3.
The Bloodhounds will finish the three-game series against CSI on Monday, April 3, at 5:00 pm in Staten Island.
