Men's Volleyball Eliminated by Brooklyn in CUNYAC Quarterfinals

The #5 men's volleyball team was eliminated by #4 Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-15), on Tuesday evening in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds close out the 2017 season with an overall record of 12-16. 

Freshman Edwin Hernandez led the way with a game-high 13 kills and six digs. Junior Juan DeJesus recorded 10 kills and a team-high eight digs. Freshman Steven Alvarado dished out a game-high 28 assists to go along with five digs. Freshman Kellvin Ortiz added five kills and senior Francisco Miranda and freshman Godwin Sequiera combined for 12 digs. 

In the first set, Brooklyn opened up with three separate 3-0 runs to lead 9-3. The Bloodhounds responded on a 9-4 run to cut the deficit to 13-12. Trailing 16-13, John Jay registered two points but the Bulldogs followed with three straight to go up 19-15. With the hosts holding a 23-18 advantage, the Bloodhounds rallied off four straight points but the Bulldogs would take the opening set, 25-23. 

In the second period, both teams exchanged points as Brooklyn led 4-3. John Jay went on a 3-0 run but the Bulldogs later tied the score at 13 apiece. John Jay regained the lead but Brooklyn ended the set taking seven of the final eight points. 

The third set went back-and-forth as the home team went up 6-5. The Bulldogs followed on a 12-1 run to break open the set, 18-6. The Bloodhounds responded on a 5-1 run but would eventually fall, 25-15. 

This match turned out to be the final one of Aleksandr Cekalins, Francisco Miranda, and Alexander Santana's collegiate career. The Athletics Department wishes them the best of luck in the future!
