Softball Suffers Tough Loss in Game 1 to Sarah Lawrence; Tie Game 2

The softball team fell in the first game of a doubleheader against Sarah Lawrence, 7-6, on Thursday afternoon before tying game 2, 0-0 (due to darkness). The Bloodhounds are now 3-16-1. The Gryphons improve to 6-19-1.

In game one, John Jay opened the scoring in the first inning when Lisa Pellegrino picked up an RBI single. Sarah Lawrence plated two in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead. The Bloodhounds responded in the second when sophomore Star Manzueta scored on a wild pitch and freshman Marissa Artz blasted her first homer of the season. The Gryphons tied up the score, 3-3, at the end of two full innings.

John Jay regained the lead in the third when Pellegrino and senior Michelle Atiq executed a double steal to plate the Bloodhounds' fourth run. Once again, the hosts would tie the score in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Pellegrino knocked in her second RBI of the game to put John Jay ahead 5-4. For the second straight time, Sarah Lawrence found a way to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.

In the last inning, Pellegrino registered her third RBI of the contest to give the Bloodhounds a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, the Gryphones singled in the game-tying and game-winning to complete the comeback.

Pellegrino finished 4-for-4 with three RBI's and one stolen base. Atiq picked up one hit, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Sophomore Inelza Salcedo scored two runs. In the circle, Pellegrino threw a complete game.

Game two consisted of a pitcher's duel between both starters. Sophomore Devika Prashad got the nod and threw 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Pellegrino came in in relief and recorded the final eight outs without allowing a base runner. Pellegrino and freshman Ashley Quinones had the hits for John Jay. The game was called after the bottom of the sixth due to darkness.

The Bloodhounds travel to Old Westbury on Friday, April 21, for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
