The baseball team split a doubleheader with Maritime College on Saturday afternoon in Throggs Neck, NY. The Bloodhounds took the first game, 12-10, before falling in game two, 17-4. John Jay is now 8-15 on the year. The Privateers are 16-10 overall.
In game one, John Jay scored three runs in the first. Senior
Charlee Rodriguez drilled a two-run homer to right center for his first homer of the season. Maritime tied the score in the bottom of the frame. In the second, sophomore
Brandon Thomas belted a three-run homer, also his first of the season, to put John Jay ahead 6-3. However, the Bloodhounds were not finished as senior
Dylan Laudano and Rodriguez picked up an RBI each to lead 8-3.
In the top of the third, senior
R.J. Davila led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by sophomore
Jurrel Diaz. In the bottom half of the inning, the Privateers plated two to cut the deficit to 9-5. In the sixth, Rodriguez picked up his fourth RBI of the game to increase the lead to five. Once again, Maritime responded with two runs to trail 10-7. Two insurance runs in the top of the seventh via RBI's by freshman
Sean Napier and Thomas put John Jay ahead 12-7 heading into the last inning. The Privateers scored three runs and had the bases loaded with two outs but Napier was able to record the final out and register his first save of the season.
Junior
Christian Rodriguez got the nod and picked up his third win of the season after throwing six innings. His brother, Charlee, finished 2-for-3 with four RBI's. Thomas also finished with four RBI's. Napier went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Laudano and Diaz each had two hits, two runs, and one RBI.
In game two, once again John Jay scored first as Laudano recorded an RBI single. Maritime bounced back to plate four in the first, three in the third, and five in the fifth to lead 12-1 after five full innings. In the top of the sixth, sophomore
C.J. Meyer and junior
Dylan Locke registered an RBI each to cut the deficit to 12-4. In the bottom half, the Privateers plated five.
Laudano was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and run.
The Bloodhounds travel to the University of Valley Forge on Tuesday, April 18, for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2:00 pm.
