Box Score The men's basketball team lost to Baruch College, 69-56, on Thursday night on the East Side of Manhattan. The Bloodhounds fall to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference. The Bearcats improve to 6-8 and 3-3 in CUNYAC.
Junior
Jerome Petty led John Jay in scoring with 16 points, nailing three three-pointers. Junior
Essien Epps recorded 11 points, six rebounds, six assists, and a team-high three steals. Sophomore
Doug Levy registered a game-high nine boards and seven points. Sophomore
Hakeem Animashaun and freshman
Kyle LaGuardia combined for 13 rebounds, nine points, three blocks, and a pair of assists. Senior
Eric Sandoval Jr. picked up six assists and four points in his Bloodhounds debut.
Baruch took an early lead but John Jay tied the score at five apiece on a free-throw by Levy. With John Jay trailing by three, Petty drained a three-pointer with 13:29 left in the first half. The Bearcats made a layup but junior
Jordan Aiken nailed a three to give the Bloodhounds a one-point advantage. Up by one, Baruch scored five straight but a jumper by Epps ended the run and cut the deficit to 23-19 with 6:54 remaining in the half. At the half, John Jay trailed 32-26.
Three minutes into the second period, the Bearcats increased its lead to 10. The Bloodhounds made four straight and a layup by Petty cut the lead down to 43-39. Baruch followed on a 6-0 run with 9:32 left to go. Once again, John Jay responded on a 7-0 run to trail 49-46. Two minutes later, Petty made two free-throws to trim the deficit to one. With three minutes remaining, Baruch scored seven straight and made late free-throws to seal the victory.
John Jay finished 20-for-46 (43.5%) from the floor, 5-for-18 (27.8%) from behind the arc, and 11-for-16 (68.8%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds visit Medgar Evers College on Saturday, January 13, for a conference game at 4:00 pm.
