Box Score The men's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Medgar Evers, 86-76, on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, the Bloodhounds improve to 5-9 on the season and 2-5 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Cougars fall to 5-9 and 2-5 in the conference.
Senior
Eric Sandoval Jr. led John Jay in scoring with a team-high 18 points, on 6-of-10 shooting, to go along with eight rebounds. Sophomore
Doug Levy recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, and three assists. Junior
Essien Epps registered 13 points, six boards, and a team-high four assists. Junior
Jerome Petty added 12 points and four rebounds. Junior
Luciano Cruz-Fernandez and freshman
Kyle LaGuardia combined for 17 points, four boards, and a pair of steals. Freshman
Myles Mills came off the bench to add 10 points, two assists, and two steals.
LaGuardia scored the first three points of the contest but Medgar scored the next six. Cruz-Fernandez then drained back-to-back three-pointers to put the Bloodhounds ahead by three. With 14:30 left in the first half, the Cougars tied the score at 13 apiece. LaGuardia and Sandoval Jr. responded by making two straight layups.
With seven minutes remaining, Medgar Evers held a 30-26 advantage. With John Jay trailing by one, LaGuardia put the Bloodhounds up by one on a dunk and Levy followed with a layup. Epps made a jumper with three seconds left as the Bloodhounds trailed 40-38 at the half.
Petty opened the second with three straight shots from behind the arc to give John Jay a seven-point advantage. Five minutes in, the hosts cut the deficit to four. Back-to-back layups by Mills and Sandoval Jr. put the Bloodhounds ahead by eight. With 4:57 left to go, Medgar Evers trailed 66-65. Levy followed with a layup and two free-throws by LaGuardia increased the lead back up to five. With John Jay holding a 77-72 advantage, Petty hit a crucial three-pointer to seal the victory for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay finished 29-for-62 (46.8%) from the field, 7-for-20 (35.0%) from behind the arc, and 21-for-31 (67.7%) from the free-throw line.
