Box Score In a wild affair, the men's basketball team defeated York College, 83-74, on Wednesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Cardinals drop to 5-10 and 3-5 in the conference.
Junior
Essien Epps led the way tying a career-high with 31 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and 15-for-18 from the charity stripe, to go along with seven rebounds. Senior
Eric Sandoval Jr. was two rebounds shy of a double-double with 16 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore
Doug Levy registered 14 points and six boards. Junior
Luciano Cruz-Fernandez added 12 points and dished out a game-high four assists.
York scored the first four points of the game but Sandoval Jr. got the Bloodhounds on the scoreboard converting a three-point play. The Cardinals followed with 10 straight points to go up 14-3 with 15:50 left in the first half. John Jay responded right away going on a 12-0 run with Cruz-Fernandez registering eight of the points.

Kyle LaGuardia gave the Bloodhounds a 17-16 advantage. York followed with seven straight to regain the lead 23-17 with 8:47 left. A layup by Sandoval Jr. and a three-pointer by Epps cut the deficit to one. With 4:32 remaining, Epps tied the score at 27 apiece on a jumper and seven seconds later, hit a free-throw to give John Jay a one-point lead. The Bloodhounds went into the half with a 42-38 advantage.
One minute into the second half, John Jay increased its lead to seven on a layup by junior
Jerome Petty. Two free-throws by Epps with 16:50 on the clock put the Bloodhounds ahead by nine. The Cardinals responded on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 52-50. Levy followed with a layup and two free-throws by Epps increased the lead back up to six. With just over 11 minutes remaining, York tied the score 56-56.
Epps then went to work as he scored the games next eight points. With the Bloodhounds up 73-64, the visitors went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead down to one. Once again, Epps nailed a much-needed three-pointer and Sandoval Jr. closed out the game with four straight points to give the Bloodhounds an 83-74 victory.
John Jay went 24-for-51 (47.1%) from the field, 8-for-21 (38.1%) from behind the arc, and 27-for-35 (77.1%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhound visit the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island on Saturday, January 20, for a conference matchup at 3:00 pm.
