Box Score The men's basketball team picked up their fourth conference win of the season after defeating Hunter College, 91-82, on Monday night at the Doghouse. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Hawks drop to 8-10 and 5-5 in the conference.
Junior
Essien Epps led John Jay in scoring with a team-high 30 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 12-for-15 from the charity stripe, and a team-high three steals. Sophomore
Hakeem Animashaun finished with 17 points, on 6-of-7 shooting, and four boards. Junior
Jerome Petty recorded 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Junior
Jordan Aiken came off the bench to add 11 points and a pair of steals. Junior
Luciano Cruz-Fernandez registered seven points and a game-high five assists.
With the Hawks leading 9-4, Epps drained a three and Levy made a layup to tie the score with 15:17 left in the opening half. The next 10 minutes went back-and-forth as there were 11 lead changes. With the score 26-26, Hunter went on a 5-0 run but John Jay stormed back with a three-pointer by Aiken and Epps converting on a three-point play to take a 32-31 advantage.
Up by one, John Jay ended the period with Epps and freshman
Kyle LaGuardia making back-to-back baskets. At the half, the Bloodhounds led 42-37.
Four-and-a-half minutes into the second half, Hunter went on a 13-4 run to regain the lead 50-46. Senior
Eric Sandoval Jr. responded with a jumper and another three-pointer by Aiken gave John Jay a one-point advantage. With 11:22 remaining in the contest, the visitors led 58-53.
The Bloodhounds scored the next seven points but once again Hunter followed with a basket to tie the score at 60 apiece. Sandoval Jr. then made a layup and Animashaun converted on a three-point play. Hunter stormed back on a 5-0 run to tie the game.
Epps then took over by converting on a non-traditional four-point play. Leading by four, the Bloodhounds broke open the game scoring 10 straight points and sealed the victory after making late free-throws.
The Bloodhounds have now won three of their last four games.
John Jay finished 30-for-54 (55.6%) from the field, 9-for-20 (45.0%) from behind the arc, and 22-for-30 (73.3%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds visit City College (CCNY) on Wednesday, January 24, for a conference game at 7:00 pm.
