Box Score The men's basketball team fought hard but lost to Lehman College, 86-68, on Saturday afternoon in the Bronx. The Bloodhounds drop to 8-11 overall and 5-7 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Lightning improve to 16-4 and 11-1 in the conference.
Senior
Eric Sandoval Jr. notched his first double-double of his Bloodhound career with a season-high and team-high 31 points, on 12-of-16 shooting, and a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Doug Levy recorded 10 points and freshman
Kyle LaGuardia grabbed nine boards. Junior
Essien Epps registered seven points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Senior
MiKing Richardson came off the bench to add eight points, four assists, and a team-high two steals.
Lehman opened the game with 14 straight points but Sandoval Jr. ended the run with a jumper. Down by 12, Epps made a jump shot and Hudzik drained a three to cut the deficit to 16-9 with 12:51 left in the first half. The hosts increased their lead to 12 but the Bloodhounds responded on a 6-0 run. Lehman followed with seven straight to go back up by 13.
Sandoval Jr. scored six of John Jay's next nine points to cut the lead down to 30-25. Trailing by 10 with 1:17 remaining in the period, Sandoval connected on a jumper and Richardson nailed a three-pointer to head into halftime down 41-36.
Two-and-a-half minutes into the second, Richardson's free-throw trimmed the deficit to three. With 12:08 left to go, Epps' layup cut the lead to 51-49. The Lightning responded with 10 straight and went on a 14-2 run to hold a 65-51 advantage.
Down by 11, Levy converted on a three-point play. With 2:55, Lehman went back up 81-65. Sandoval's 14 points in the second half was not enough as the Lightning held on for an 86-68 victory on their homecoming.
John Jay finished 24-for-65 (36.9%) from the field, 6-for-24 (25.0%) from behind the arc, and 14-for-20 (70.0%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds continue their road trip visiting the College of New Rochelle on Tuesday, January 30, for a non-conference game at 7:00 pm.
