Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Meet in Season Opener; DeJesus & Surdel Record 21 Kills Each

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The men's volleyball team split a non-conference tri-meet in their season opener on Sunday afternoon on the campus of York College in Jamaica, NY. The Bloodhounds fell to Penn State Altoona, 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19), and then picked up their first win, 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-20), against the College of Saint Elizabeth. 

In the match vs. PSU Altoona, senior Juan DeJesus and sophomore Krystian Surdel both finished two digs shy of double-doubles. Surdel recorded a game-high 13 kills and eight digs. DeJesus registered 12 kills and eight digs. In his collegiate debut, freshman Christopher Rincon dished out 35 assists to go along with six digs and four total block attempts. Senior Alexander Santana had eight kills and sophomore Godwin Sequiera added a team-high 10 digs. Sophomore Kellvin Ortiz led all scorers with five total block attempts. 

In the win against St. Elizabeth, DeJeus led the way with a match-high nine kills, five digs, and a pair of service aces. Rincon tallied 27 assists and Sequiera had a game-high seven digs. Surdel finished with eight kills and a match-high five aces. Santana added five kills. 

John Jay totaled 74 kills, 69 digs, 68 assists, 18 total blocks, and 16 service aces in the two matches. 

The Bloodhounds face Medgar Evers and Saint Elizabeth on Saturday, February 3, in Brooklyn, NY.
