The men's basketball team stormed past City College (CCNY), 88-61, on Friday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds pick up their first conference victory and improve to 4-7 on the season and 1-4 in CUNYAC. The Beavers drop to 0-12 and 0-5 in the conference.
Sophomore
Doug Levy recorded his second double-double of the season with a team-high 14 rebounds and 12 points. Sophomore
Hakeem Animashaun led John Jay in scoring with 16 points to go along with seven boards and a game-high three blocks. Junior
Jerome Petty came off the bench to add 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Junior
Essien Epps finished with 11 points, a season-high and game-high eight assists, a game-high six steals, and four boards. Freshman
Kyle LaGuardia totaled 10 points, four rebounds, and a pair of steals. Freshmen
Matt Hudzik and
Odis Gause combined for 15 points.
With the score knotted at two apiece, John Jay scored 12 straight points. CCNY cut the deficit to eight but Gause made a jumper to extend the lead back up to 10. Leading 18-10 with 14:14 left in the first half, Hudzik drained a three and Epps made two free-throws. The Bloodhounds then went on a 10-0 run to hold a 31-13 advantage. At the half, John Jay was up 48-31.
Levy opened the second half with a layup. The Beavers cut the deficit to 59-42 but Petty and Epps made two straight layups. With six minutes left in the contest, the Bloodhounds held a 79-49 lead and would go on to record their first conference victory of the season.
John Jay finished 31-for-74 (41.9%) from the floor, 7-for-29 (24.1%) from behind the arc, and 19-for-28 (67.9%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds face New York University (NYU) on Monday, January 8, at 7:00 pm on the campus of Hunter College.
