Box Score The men's basketball team almost upset New York University but fell 79-68 on Monday night on the campus of Hunter College. The Bloodhounds drop to 4-8 on the season. The Violets improve to 8-3 overall.
Sophomore
Hakeem Animashaun and junior
Essien Epps led John Jay throughout the game. Animashaun led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, on 10-of-16 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds. Epps recorded 19 points, seven boards, a team-high four assists, and a game-high four steals. Junior
Jerome Petty totaled 11 points, two assists, and two steals. Freshman
Kyle LaGuardia added eight points, six rebounds, a team-high two blocks, and two steals.
Animashaun opened the game with a layup and Petty drained a three to put the Bloodhounds up by five. With 16:28 left in the first half, NYU tied the game at nine apiece. The Violets then went up by four but layups by Epps and LaGuardia once again tied the score. NYU scored seven straight but back-to-back layups by Animashaun ended the run. The hosts ended the period on a 10-4 run to go into halftime with a 39-28 lead.
Animashaun scored the Bloodhounds' first seven points of the second half as John Jay trailed 41-35. With 9:31 left to go, NYU increased its lead to 56-45. The Bloodhounds went to work with seven straight to cut the deficit to four. The Violets followed with three straight three-pointers to go back up by 13. With the score 69-56 and 2:44 remaining, John Jay went on a 10-0 run, courtesy of seven points by Epps. NYU converted on a free-throw and Epps made a layup to cut the lead down to 70-68. The Violets ended the game with nine straight points.
John Jay went 29-for-68 (42.6%) from the field, 4-for-12 (33.3%) from behind the arc, and 6-for-10 (60.0%) from the free-throw line.
The Bloodhounds visit Baruch College on Thursday, January 11, for a conference game at 7:30 pm.
