In a back-and-forth intense match, the women's tennis team came out with a 5-4 victory against Baruch College on Thursday afternoon at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, NJ. The Bloodhounds improve to 7-3 on the season and 4-1 in the conference. The Bearcats drop to 3-4 and 3-3 in CUNYAC.
In doubles, the tandem of freshman
Kellie Murtha and
Briana Schmidt cruised to an 8-1 win at number three. At the top spot, sophomore
Gabrielle Schuck and freshman
Mariana Rodriguez came out with an 8-4 victory. Heading into singles play, John Jay held a 2-1 advantage.
Baruch won second, third, and fifth singles to take a 4-2 lead. At number six, Murtha picked up her second victory of the day after winning 6-1, 6-3. The Bloodhounds tied the score at four apiece after Rodriguez clinched a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win.
The match would be decided at four singles. Schmidt dropped the first set but rebounded to take the second, 6-4. In the third and deciding set, the Comfrey, Minnesota native came out on top by a score of 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Bloodhounds.
With the win, John Jay climbs to second place in the
CUNYAC Standings and will receive a first round bye.
The Bloodhounds travel to Lehman College on Friday, October 12, for their final conference match of the season. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
