The #4 men's soccer team shut out #5 Brooklyn College, 1-0, in the CUNYAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Bloodhounds improve to 6-8-1. The Bulldogs end their season with an overall record of 4-14-1.
John Jay dominated much of the first 15 minutes. In the 17th minute, freshman
Peter Ceesay found a loose ball and blasted a shot from outside the box into the far right corner to give the Bloodhounds a 1-0 advantage. It was the midfielder's first collegiate goal. John Jay kept the pressure up and went into halftime with a one-goal lead.
The Bloodhounds outshot Brooklyn by a margin of 5-1 in the opening half. Sophomore
Steven Towler recorded one save.
The Bulldogs intensified the pressure in the second half. John Jay's stellar defenders consisting of junior
Michael DeMarco, sophomores
Nicholas Towler and
Nadder Munassar, and freshman
Andrew DeCanio consistently cleared the ball out of the box. S. Towler also made two big saves in the period and would go on to pick up his second straight shutout and third in his last four matches.
Sophomore
James Haddad led all players with a team-high three shots and match-high two shots on goal.
The Bloodhounds will have a 2017 championship rematch against top seeded College of Staten Island on Saturday, October 27, in the CUNYAC semifinals at 2:00 pm at Brooklyn College.
