Four Players in Double Digits as Women's Basketball Picks up First Win of the Season; Lily Rakitzis Pours in Game-High 16 Points

The women's basketball team defeated the College of Mount St. Vincent, 65-54, on Tuesday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds record their first win of the 2018-19 season and improve to 1-2. The Dolphins remain winless at 0-2. 

Freshman Lily Raktizis led all scorers with a game-high 16 points, five steals, five rebounds, and three assists. Junior Nyasha Howard picked up her first double-double as a Bloodhound with 12 points, a team-high 12 boards, and five steals.

Junior All'aha Albright finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Freshman Katie Healy provided a spark for John Jay as she came off the bench to tally 13 points, seven boards, and five steals. 

The first four minutes of the game went back-and-forth as there were three lead changes. With the score tied, the Bloodhounds went on a 7-0 run courtesy of four straight points by Healy. The Dolphins responded on a 10-1 run to tie the score 12-12. Two late free-throws by CMSV gave them a two-point advantage at the end of the first period. 

With John Jay trailing by three, Healy and Lipton made back-to-back layups to give the Bloodhounds a 25-24 lead in the second. The guests went into halftime holding a 33-29 advantage. 

Two minutes into the third, John Jay trailed by seven. Three minutes later, Raktizis nailed a three-pointer and two free-throws by Albright cut the deficit to 40-39. The Dolphins followed on a 9-0 run to lead by 10. Raktizis responded by converting on a three-point play and a late free-throw by Howard trimmed the lead down to 49-43 heading into the fourth. 

A three-pointer by CMSV increased their lead back up to nine. The Bloodhounds stormed back with 12 straight points to go up 55-52. The Dolphins cut the deficit down to one but John Jay finished the game on a 10-0 run for their first win of the season.

The Bloodhounds went 23-for-67 (37.7%) from the field, 1-for-7 (14.3%) from behind the arc, and 18-for-28 (64.3%) from the free-throw line. 

John Jay snaps a 16-game home losing streak dating back to February 16, 2017 when the Bloodhounds defeated York College in the CUNYAC Quarterfinals.

The Bloodhounds host St. Joseph's College Long Island on Saturday, November 24, at 1:00 pm at the Doghouse.
