Men's Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Cruise Past Brooklyn 65-52; Epps & Levy Notch Double-Doubles

Box Score The men's basketball team used a strong second half to top Brooklyn College, 65-52, on Saturday afternoon at the Doghouse. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 11-13 on the season and 8-7 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs drop to 6-18 and 6-9 in the conference. The Bloodhounds are currently tied for fourth in CUNYAC with Hunter College. 

Junior Essien Epps recorded his second double-double of the year with a game-high 19 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore Doug Levy finished with his second straight double-double and sixth of the season with 18 points, on 8-of-14 shooting, a game-high 13 boards, and a pair of blocks. Senior Eric Sandoval Jr. came off the bench to register nine rebounds, eight points, four assists, and a season-high and game-high three blocks. Senior MiKing Richardson added eight points and three assists. Freshman Kyle LaGuardia had six points and four boards. 

Brooklyn scored eight of the games first 10 points as Epps made a layup to end the 8-0 run. With the Bloodhounds trailing 11-4, John Jay went on a 7-0 run to tie the score with 10:16 left in the first half. 

Trailing by two, Epps hit two free-throws and Sandoval made a layup to give the Bloodhounds a two-point advantage. Down 24-20, Levy made a layup and freshman Matt Hudzik drained a three to put John Jay ahead by one with 2:00 remaining. A three-pointer by Petty as time expired gave the Bloodhounds a 28-27 lead at the half. 

LaGuardia and Levy opened the second with back-to-back baskets to increase the advantage to five. The Bulldogs fought back to tie the score 32-32 with 13:30 left to go. 

The Bloodhounds responded by going on a 16-0 run in a six minute span as Epps and Levy scored 12 of the points. With 2:13 left in the contest, Brooklyn cut the deficit to nine. However, Epps and Richardson sank four straight free-throws as the Bloodhounds held on for a much-needed victory over Brooklyn College. 

John Jay went 23-for-56 (41.1%) from the floor, 6-for-21 (28.6%) from behind the arc, and 13-for-18 (72.2%) from the free-throw line. 

The Bloodhounds host Baruch College in the season finale on Tuesday, February 13, at approximately 8:00 pm at the Doghouse. Before the game, the Athletics Department will honor seniors MiKing Richardson and Eric Sandoval Jr. along with team managers David Pinedo and Ari Baim as part of Senior Night.
