Men's Volleyball Tops Brooklyn 3-1; Falls to Hunter to Open CUNYAC Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The men's volleyball team opened up conference play with a split on Monday afternoon at the Hunter College Sportsplex. The Bloodhounds defeated Brooklyn College, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19), and then lost to Hunter, 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19). John Jay is now 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in CUNYAC. 

In the win against the Bulldogs of Brooklyn, sophomore Krystian Surdel led all hitters with a season-high and game-high 16 kills and six digs. Freshman Christopher Rincon dished out a match-high 37 assists to go along with eight kills, six digs, and a team-high two service aces. Senior Juan DeJesus and Alexander Santana finished with nine kills and three digs each. Sophomore Kellvin Ortiz had nine kills and sophomore Godwin Sequiera added a match-high 14 digs. Freshman Rintaro Kato had six digs. 

The first set went back-and-forth as John Jay led 9-7. The Bloodhounds scored five straight to go up 16-8. The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 17-13 but John Jay recorded five of the final eight points to take the first set. 

With the Bloodhounds leading 2-1 in the second, the Bulldogs went on a 5-1 run to hold a three-point advantage. John Jay cut the lead to 14-13 but Brooklyn followed with two straight. The Bloodhounds tied the score at 17 apiece. The Bulldogs took four of the next five points and then went on a 3-0 run to even the score at 1-1. 

Just like the opening set, both teams exchanged points in the third as John Jay led 7-5. Brooklyn registered the next three points to regain the lead. With the score 15-15, the Bloodhounds tallied three straight and ended the period on a 4-1 run to go up 2-1. 

John Jay opened the fourth winning five of the first six points. John Jay followed on a 4-0 run to hold a 11-3 advantage. Leading 15-7, the Bloodhounds broke open the set on a 6-1 run to seal the victory. 

Against the Hunter Hawks, DeJesus recorded a match-high 12 kills and seven digs. Rincon tallied a team-high 34 assists and three kills. Surdel notched 10 kills and six digs. Sequiera finished with a season-high and game-high 15 digs. Ortiz and Santana had six kills each. Kato added a season-high nine digs.

For the day, John Jay totaled 92 kills, 88 assists, 88 digs, 22 total blocks, and seven service aces. 

The Bloodhounds travel to Sarah Lawrence College on Friday, February 23, for a non-conference match at 7:00 pm.
