Rookies Gause & Hudzik Combine for 40 Points in Loss at Immaculata

Box Score The men's basketball team lost to Immaculata University, 93-82, on Saturday afternoon in the CUNYAC/CSAC Challenge in Immaculata, PA. The Bloodhounds drop to 8-13 on the season. The Macs improve to 11-9 overall. 

Freshman Odis Gause finished with his best game of the season pouring in a game-high 23 points, on 11-of-13 shooting, and six rebounds. Freshman Matt Hudzik recorded 17 points after hitting five three-pointers. Junior Essien Epps registered 16 points and five assists. Senior MiKing Richardson had 10 points, five assists, and four boards. Sophomore Doug Levy added a game-high nine rebounds, eight points, a career-high and team-high eight assists, and John Jay's lone block. 

With the Bloodhounds trailing 8-4, junior Jerome Petty converted on a three-point play to cut the lead down to one. Immaculata scored the next four points but Gause responded with a layup with 13:07 left in the opening half. 

The Macs increased their lead to six but Gause followed to cut the deficit to four on a layup. With John Jay trailing by seven, Hudzik nailed his first three-pointer of the game. The Bloodhounds took their first lead since the opening minutes on a three by Hudzik, 21-20, with 7:39 on the clock. A layup by Epps with 31 seconds remaining in the period trimmed the deficit to 36-35 heading into halftime. 

One minute into the second, Immaculata quickly increased their lead to seven. Epps followed with a three-pointer and two free-throws to cut the lead down to 41-40. After a layup by Gause, the Macs went on a 7-0 run until Gause converted on another layup. 

Down by 10, Gause scored four straight and Hudzik drained a three. However, Immacuata responded on an 8-0 run to lead 62-51 with 12:42 left to go. With the Bloodhounds trailing by 11, Epps hit a three and Gause converted on a three-point play with 4:23 remaining. The Macs once again followed with six straight points and would hold on for a 93-82 non-conference victory. 

Gause and Hudzik finished the second period with 17 and 11 points, respectively. 

John Jay finished 30-for-60 (50.0%) from the floor, 9-for-24 (37.5%) from behind the arc, and 13-for-15 (86.7%) from the charity stripe. 

The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse for conference play when they host Medgar Evers College on Tuesday, February 6, at 8:00 pm. The game will be live streamed at www.johnjayathletics.com/watch
