Men's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match; Bloodhounds Start Season 3-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The men's volleyball team swept a non-conference tri-meet on Saturday afternoon in Morristown, NJ on the campus of the College of Saint Elizabeth. John Jay first shutout Medgar Evers, 3-0 (25-7, 25-18, 25-14) and then followed with a 3-0 win over Saint Elizabeth (25-12, 25-11, 25-11). The Bloodhounds start the season with a 3-1 record. 

In the match against the Cougars of Medgar Evers College, sophomore Krystian Surdel finished with a match-high 12 kills and three service aces. Freshman Christopher Rincon dished out a game-high 22 assists to go along with four digs, three kills, and a pair of aces. Freshman Jose Peralta added a game-high four service aces and sophomore Godwin Sequiera had a match-high six digs. Senior Juan DeJesus and freshman Dylan Senkiw combined for nine kills. 

John Jay took the first five points and eight of nine in the first set. Leading 13-4, the Bloodhounds went on a 5-0 run and eventually closed out the period taking the final four points. Just like the first set, John Jay took an early 5-1 lead. Medgar Evers trimmed the deficit to 6-4 but the Bloodhounds followed with two straight. The Cougars eventually tied the score at 11 apiece. John Jay responded with four straight and went on an 11-4 run to win the middle set.

The Bloodhounds opened the third and final set taking the first six points. With John Jay up 11-7, the Bloodhounds went on a 7-3 run to increase their lead to eight. John Jay registered the final four of five points. 

In the second match of the day against the Eagles of the College of Saint Elizabeth, DeJesus tallied 11 kills and a season-high and game-high six service aces. Surdel notched 11 kills and five aces. Rincon finished with 24 assists and five kills. Sequiera led all scorers with five digs. Freshman Anthony Francois had a season-high five kills. Sophomore Kellvin Ortiz added four kills and a match-high four total blocks. 

The Bloodhounds started the game on an 8-3 run. John Jay followed by taking the next five points and would win the opening set 25-12. The Bloodhounds won the first 10 points of the second period. Up by 11, the Eagles trimmed the deficit to 15-6. John Jay responded by increasing their lead back up to 12 and cruised to win the set. In the final period, John Jay registered the first nine of 10 points. The Bloodhounds then recorded five straight to complete the sweep. 

For the day, John Jay totaled 73 kills, 65 assists, 39 digs, 31 service aces, and 18 total blocks. 

The Bloodhounds travel to St. Joseph's College Long Island on Sunday, February 4, for a non-conference match at 11:00 am.
