Men's Basketball Cruises to Win Over Medgar Evers 81-62; Snap Three-Game Losing Streak

Box Score The men's basketball team ended its three-game losing streak after defeating Medgar Evers, 81-62, on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 9-13 on the season and 6-7 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Cougars fall to 6-16 and 4-9 in the conference. 

Sophomore Essien Epps recorded a game-high 24 points, shooting 4-for-6 from behind the arc, with five rebounds and three assists. Senior Eric Sandoval Jr. came off the bench to register 16 points, seven boards, a game-high six assists, three steals, and two blocks. Sophomore Doug Levy fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high three blocks. Junior Jerome Petty had 10 points and three steals. Senior MiKing Richardon dished out five assists and junior Jordan Aiken added seven points. 

Freshman Kyle LaGuardia and Epps opened the game with back-to-back layups. With the score tied at four apiece, Petty drained a three but the Cougars followed with a three-pointer of their own. 

The Bloodhounds responded on an 8-0 run to lead 15-7 with 13:59 left in the opening half. Down by 11, Medgar Evers scored five straight to cut the deficit to 20-14. Sandoval Jr. quickly responded with two straight baskets to put John Jay back up by 10. 

With the Bloodhounds holding a 26-16 advantage, Levy scored four straight and a monstrous dunk by LaGuardia increased the lead to 16. John Jay went into the half with a 39-27 lead. 

Epps scored the Bloodhounds' first five points of the second half. The Cougars cut the lead to nine but Epps and Levy responded with back-to-back layups. With John Jay up 56-42, Sandoval Jr. hit two straight buckets with 11:35 left to go. 

Trailing by 16, Medgar Evers trimmed the deficit to 12 but once again, the Bloodhounds fought back with four free-throws by junior Luciano Cruz-Fernandez and Sandoval Jr. With just under five minutes remaining, head coach Ryan Hyland was able to empty his bench and see his team pick up a pivotal 81-62 victory over Medgar Evers. 

John Jay finished 31-for-60 (51.7%) from the field, 6-for-14 (42.9%) from behind the arc, and 13-for-17 (76.5%) from the free-throw line. 

The Bloodhounds visit York College on Thursday, February 8, for a conference game at 7:30 pm.
