Men's Basketball Holds On For 80-77 Win to Clinch Playoff Spot; Five Players in Double Figures

Box Score The men's basketball team suffered a scare but held on for an 80-77 win over York College on Thursday night in Jamaica, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 10-13 on the year and get back to .500 in CUNYAC play at 7-7. John Jay has now clinched a playoff spot in the CUNYAC postseason. 

Junior Essien Epps led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, going 13-for-15 from the free-throw line, a game-high five steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore Doug Levy notched his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points, a game-high 10 boards, and a game-high two blocks. Senior Eric Sandoval Jr. came off the bench to register 14 points, on 7-of-12 shooting, seven rebounds, and a team-high six assists. Senior MiKing Richardson tallied 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Freshman Kyle LaGuardia added 13 points, five boards, and a pair of steals. 

LaGuardia started the game with a dunk and layup but two minutes later, York held a one-point lead. The Bloodhounds responded on an 8-0 run to lead 14-7 with 13:53 left in the opening half. A three by Richardson increased the lead back up to 10. 

The Cardinals cut the deficit to 22-15 but John Jay responded with a jumper by LaGuardia and a three-pointer by Epps. Down by 12, York scored six straight to trail 27-21 with 7:33 remaining. 

The Bloodhounds broke open the period on a 9-0 run but the hosts closed the gap to 38-29 at the half. 

Levy opened the second half with a layup and Richardson followed with a three to increase the advantage back up to 14. Up by 15, the Cardinals scored five straight to trail 49-39 with 15:30 left to go. 

A layup by Epps put John Jay ahead by 15. Down by 10, York scored five straight with 7:12 remaining. The Bloodhounds responded right away as Epps hit two free-throws and Sandoval made a jumper.

The Cardinals cut the deficit to 70-67 but Epps converted two free-throws with 2:39 left. Trailing by 2, Richardson made a layup and Epps hit two free-throws with 0:28 on the clock. 

A free-throw by Aiken 11 seconds later increased the lead to three. York had a chance to tie the game but their three-pointer fell short as the Bloodhounds held on for an 80-77 road victory. 

John Jay finished 29-for-58 (50.0%) from the field, 4-for-16 (25.0%) from behind the arc, and 18-for-27 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.
