Men's Volleyball Splits Conference Tri-Match at the Doghouse; Defeat Lehman in Five-Set Thriller

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The men's volleyball team split a CUNYAC tri-match on Saturday afternoon at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds fell to Baruch College, 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19), in the first match of the day. John Jay then responded to top Lehman College, 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 27-25, 19-25, 18-16), in a back-and-forth match. The Bloodhounds are now 10-7 on the year and 3-2 in conference play.

Against the Bearcats of Baruch, freshman Anthony Francois led John Jay with a season-high and team-high 10 kills, three digs, three total blocks, and a pair of service aces. Senior Alexander Santana recorded nine kills, a team-high 13 digs, and a season-high and match-high six total blocks. Sophomore Krystian Surdel finished with nine kills and eight digs. Sophomore Godwin Sequiera notched his second straight double-double with a game-high 36 assists and 11 digs. Senior Juan DeJesus picked up nine kills and six digs. Freshman Rintaro Kato added eight digs. 

The Bearcats took the first two sets by a score of 25-21. In the third, John Jay jumped out to an early 4-2 lead but Baruch tied it at five apiece. With the Bloodhounds trailing 11-10, John Jay scored four straight to go up by three. The Bearcats responded to the the score at 14-14. John Jay ended the set on a 5-3 run to cut the deficit to 2-1 in games. In the fourth, Baruch recorded seven of the first nine points. Down by four, the Bloodhounds went on a 4-0 run to tie the score 8-8. With the score knotted at 16 all, the Bearcats registered four straight. The visitors ended the game on a 5-2 run to win the match.

In the win over the Lightning, Surdel finished with a career-high and game-high 24 kills and seven digs. Sequiera picked up his third straight double-double with a season-high and match-high 54 assists and 12 digs. Santana notched his first double-double of the year with a season-high 15 kills and season-high 14 digs. DeJesus finished with nine kills and seven digs. Kato had a career-high 14 digs and freshman Dylan Senkiw added a match-high three service aces. Francois registered 10 kills and three digs. 

In a back-and-forth first set, the Bloodhounds came out on top 25-23. Lehman evened the score in the second after taking the set 25-19. John Jay won the middle set 27-25 to go up 2-1. The Lightning took the fourth set 25-19 to create a fifth and deciding set. 

In the fifth, both teams exchanged points as the score was knotted at 11 apiece. John Jay took the next two points but Lehman went on a 3-1 run to tie the score 14-14. With the Lightning leading 16-15 and match point, the Bloodhounds stormed back to win the next three points and take the set and match, 3-2.
