#3 Men's Volleyball Defeats #6 CCNY 3-1 in CUNYAC Quarterfinals; Advance to Semifinals on Friday at 4:00 pm

Box Score The #3 men's volleyball team eliminated #6 City College, 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 25-13), on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 15-8 on the season. The Beavers conclude their year with an overall record of 12-10. 

"I was very happy with how the team battled all game long," head coach Leszek Stankiewicz said. "I felt our preparation the entire week and the way we followed the game plan were some of the reasons we came out on top tonight."

Freshman Anthony Francois recorded 10 kills on 16 attempts and four total blocks. Sophomore Krystian Surdel finished with a team-high 13 kills, five digs, and a pair of service aces. Senior Juan DeJesus tallied 12 kills, five digs, and two aces. Sophomore Godwin Sequiera dished out a match-high 41 assists to go along with seven digs. Senior Alexander Santana added eight kills and freshman Rintaro Kato had a game-high 11 digs. 

In the opening set with the score tied 3-3, John Jay rallied off six straight. CCNY cut the deficit to 14-11 but the Bloodhounds responded on an 8-0 run to take the first set, 25-17. The second went back-and-forth as the score was knotted at nine apiece. The Beavers went on a 10-3 run to go ahead 20-15. John Jay chipped at the lead to trail 21-20. The guests took four of the last five points to even the score at 1-1. 

With the Bloodhounds leading 8-7 in the third, the hosts recorded three straight to increase the lead to four. Trailing 14-12, CCNY went on a 3-0 run to regain the advantage. The Beavers increased their lead to 21-18 but John Jay responded to end the set on a 7-2 run to go up 2-1. 

The Bloodhounds registered five of the first seven points in the fourth. Leading 11-9, John Jay broke open the period on a 6-1 run. The Bloodhounds ended the match tallying the final seven points to complete the victory. 

For his efforts, Francois was named the CUNYAC Player of the Game. 

The Bloodhounds will now face #2 Baruch College on Friday, April 13, at 4:00 pm at the Baruch ARC Arena. The winner of the match will play in the championship at approximately 8:00 pm. 

"We are excited to compete in the semifinals on Friday at Baruch," added Stankiewicz.
