Box Score The #3 men's volleyball team lost to #2 Baruch College, 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-15), on Friday afternoon at the Baruch ARC Arena. The Bloodhounds finish with an overall record of 15-9, their best season in program history.
Senior
Juan DeJesus led the way with a team-high 10 kills, seven digs, and two service aces. Sophomore
Krystian Surdel registered eight kills and seven digs. Sophomore
Godwin Sequiera dished out a team-high 29 assists to go along with eight digs. Freshman
Rintaro Kato recorded a match-high 16 digs and senior
Alexander Santana added five kills and 15 digs. Freshman
Dylan Senkiw had seven kills, a team-high four total blocks, and a game-high three aces.
The first set went back-and-forth as there were 11 lead changes in the first 22 points as John Jay led 12-10. Baruch followed with six straight to go up by four. The Bearcats ended the set winning three of the final four points to hold a 1-0 lead.
Just like the first set, both teams exchanged points in the second as the Bearcats went up 4-3. Baruch then went on a 5-1 run to increase the lead to 9-4. Down by seven, John Jay stormed back on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 16-15. The hosts responded to end the period on a 9-3 run to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Bearcats took the first six of eight points in the third. The Bloodhounds cut the lead down to 6-5 but Baruch followed on a 4-1 run to go up 10-6. John Jay regained the lead after going on a 4-2 run to lead 16-14. The Bloodhounds closed the gap to 2-1 after winning seven of the final nine points.
Baruch opened the fourth with a three-point lead but John Jay trimmed the deficit to 12-11. The Bearcats went on a 4-0 run to increase the lead to five. Baruch ended the match after taking eight of the last nine points.
This match turned out to be the final one of
Juan DeJesus,
Kellvin Ortiz, and
Alexander Santana's collegiate career. The Athletics Department wishes them the best of luck in the future!
