Niovis Monsanto & Mirialis Almanzar Record Career-High 18 Kills Apiece in Five-Set Victory Over NJCU

The women's volleyball team defeated New Jersey City University, 3-2 (25-15, 25-17, 19-25, 24-26, 15-11), on Thursday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 2-10 on the season. The Gothic Knights drop to 5-10 overall. 

Senior Mirialis Almanzar had a career-night for John Jay. The middle blocker finished with a career-high 18 kills, career-high eight digs, and career-high and match-high six service aces. Sophomore Niovis Monsanto also recorded one of the best games of her collegiate career. The outside hitter tallied a career-high 18 kills, 17 digs, and a pair of service aces.

Freshman Stephany Chhay notched a career-high and game-high 19 digs. Senior Kimberly Rodriguez fell two digs shy of a double-double with a season-high and match-high 45 assists, eight digs, and three aces. Sophomore Sophia Wheelan registered nine kills and junior Freysha Rivera and freshman Jamarie Silverio combined for 11 digs. 

NJCU recorded seven of the first 10 points in the opening set. John Jay followed on a 6-1 run to even the score at eight apiece. Leading 15-14, the Bloodhounds ended the period on a 11-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.  The second set went back and forth as the Gothic Knights held a 6-5 advantage. With the score knotted at 11-11, John Jay went on a 4-1 run. The guests cut the deficit to 17-16 but the Bloodhounds responded registering eight of the next nine points to take a two-set lead. 

John Jay held an 8-5 advantage in the third but NJCU evened the score at 10 apiece. The Gothic Knights broke open the period on a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to 2-1. Both teams exchanged points in the fourth as the score was tied 10-10. NJCU went on a 7-0 run and would eventually take the set to tie the match at two sets apiece. 

In the fifth and deciding set, the Bloodhounds jumped out to an early 6-3 advantage. John Jay increased the lead to 10-4. The Gothic Knights made a late run but the Bloodhounds held on for a 15-11 victory in the period. 

John Jay totaled 52 kills, 50 assists, 13 service aces, three total blocks, and 66 digs. 

The Bloodhounds return to conference play on Tuesday, October 8, when they host Hunter College at 11:00 am at the Doghouse.
