Women's Basketball's Fourth-Quarter Comeback Falls Short in High-Scoring Affair at Gwynedd Mercy; All'aha Albright Drops a Career-High 30 Points

The women's basketball team lost to Gwynedd Mercy University, 91-86, in a high-scoring affair on Saturday afternoon in Gwynedd Valley, PA. The Bloodhounds drop to 2-5 on the year. The Griffins improve to 2-5 overall. 

Senior All'aha Albright finished with her second double-double of the season with a career-high and game-high 30 points, season-high 12 rebounds, and two steals. The Jamaica, NY native also went 7-for-13 from behind the arc. Sophomore Katie Healy also notched a double-double with a season-high 26 points, 16 rebounds, and a team-high three steals. 

Senior Nyasha Howard recorded 16 rebounds, a season-high and game-high nine assists, and a game-high two blocks. Sophomore Lily Rakitzis tallied 16 points and five assists. 

Healy and Howard nailed back-to-back jumpers at the end of the first quarter to give the Bloodhounds a 13-11 lead heading into the second. With less than one minute remaining in the half, Gwynedd Mercy increased their lead to seven but John Jay trimmed the deficit to 38-32 at halftime. 

Albright opened the third with a three-pointer but the hosts scored seven straight to hold a 10-point advantage. Down by six, Albright sank another three with 6:29 left in the third. Trailing by one, Albright put the Bloodhounds ahead by two with her third three-pointer of the quarter. She ended the period with two free-throws to give John Jay a 63-60 lead heading into the fourth. 

Ninety-nine seconds in, the score was tied 66-66. The Griffins then went on an 8-0 run with just over five minutes left to go. Gwynedd Mercy increased their lead to nine with 3:31 on the clock but Healy scored five straight to cut the deficit to four. 

Trailing by six, Albright tallied the next five points and a free-throw by Healy tied the game at 84-84 with less than a minute remaining. However, the Griffins ended the contest on a 7-2 run to take the non-conference game. 

John Jay finished 28-for-62 (45.2%) from the floor, 8-for-18 (44.4%) from behind the arc, and 22-for-29 (75.9%) from the free-throw line. 

The Bloodhounds enter conference play on Tuesday, December 3, when they travel to Lehman College for a 5:00 pm tip-off.
