Late Free-Throws by Betchina Jean Pierre With Two Seconds Remaining Seals Victory For Women's Basketball at Medgar Evers

With two seconds remaining and the Bloodhounds down by one, freshman Betchina Jean Pierre made a pair of free-throws as the women's basketball team defeated  Medgar Evers, 53-52, on Tuesday evening in Brooklyn, NY. John Jay improves to 11-11 on the season and 7-6 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Cougars drop to 1-22 and 1-13 in the conference.

Freshman Katie Healy picked up a double-double, her 11th of the season, with a game-high 23 points, game-high 14 rebounds, and team-high three steals. Junior Nyasha Howard registered 14 points, seven rebounds, and a team-high four assists. Sophomore Jessica Gorman came off the bench to contribute eight points and five rebounds.

The first quarter went back-and-forth as there were four lead changes. At the end of one, the Cougars led 13-12. Trailing by four in the second, Howard and Healy made two straight layups to tie the game. A late jumper by Healy gave the Bloodhounds a 22-19 advantage at the half.

Both teams exchanged baskets as the score was 29-29 with 3:09 left in the third. Down by four, Healy made a basket to cut the deficit to 33-31 heading into the fourth.

John Jay opened the final period on an 8-0 run as Howard scored the first five and Healy the last three. Trailing by six, Medgar Evers went on an 8-2 run to tie the score at 46 apiece with 3:05 left to go.

The hosts scored the next four points but Gorman responded with a three-pointer. Trailing by three with eight seconds remaining, Howard hit two free-throws to cut the lead down to one. The Cougars fouled with two seconds left which sent Jean Pierre to the charity stripe. Attempting her first free-throws of her collegiate career, the guard sank both to give John Jay a one-point lead. The Bloodhounds' defense then created a turnover to seal the conference victory.

John Jay finished 21-for-62 (33.9%) from the floor, 5-for-17 (29.4%) from behind the arc, and 6-for-17 (35.3%) from the free-throw line.

The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse to take on York College on Saturday, February 9, at 1:00 pm. The game will be live streamed at www.johnjayathletics.com/watch
