The softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against New Jersey City University on Monday afternoon in Jersey City, NJ. The Bloodhounds won the opener, 8-6, and then lost in game two, 6-3. John Jay is now 3-7 on the year. The Gothic Knights are now 2-12.
In game one, the Bloodhounds got off to a hot start with three runs in the first inning. Sophomore
AnneMarie Rivera knocked in an RBI double, freshman
Ashley Sclafani drew a bases loaded walk, and freshman
Julianne Graepel singled in a run.
In the top of the second, junior
Jessica Barbaria blasted her first home run of the season. New Jersey City cut the deficit to 5-4 after three full innings.
With the bases loaded in the fourth, Rivera delivered a two-run single. Junior
Marissa Artz followed with an RBI single to increase the lead to 8-4 as John Jay would go on for the victory.
Rivera picked up the victory in the circle after throwing a complete game and allowing seven hits, four earned runs, and struck out three. Barbaria finished 3-for-4 with a game-high three runs. Rivera went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBI's. Graepel and sophomore
Tommi Mandell registered two hits each.
In game two, Barbaria gave the Bloodhounds a 1-0 advantage in the first after recording a sacrifice fly. Trailing by one in the top of the second, freshman
Nicole Lopez brought home senior
Devika Prashad to even the score.
The Gothic Knights responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 5-2. Lopez tallied her second RBI of the game in the seventh inning when she drove in Rivera with an RBI single.
Graepel got the start and threw five innings. Mandell and Rivera finished 1-for-3 with a double and run each. Mandell also swiped two bases.
The Bloodhounds open up conference play on Friday, March 29, when they take on Hunter College at 3:00 pm at Randall's Island Field 12.
