Softball Tops Staten Island 4-3 For First Time in Last 18 Meetings; Julianne Graepel Notches Win After Throwing Gem

For the first time since April 10, 2009, the softball team defeated the College of Staten Island, 4-3, on an overcast Wednesday afternoon in Staten Island, NY. Coming into the game, the Bloodhounds lost their last 18 contests against the Dolphins.

John Jay improves to 11-14 overall and 5-2 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. CSI falls to 10-13 and 7-2 in the conference.

Staten Island opened the scoring in the first on an unearned run. In the top of the second, starting pitcher Julianne Graepel escaped a one-out first and second jam with consecutive ground outs.

In the bottom of the fourth and John Jay still trailing 1-0, juniors Mariela Guzman and Marissa Artz reached base on a walk. Sophomore AnneMarie Rivera followed to crush a two-run double to left center to give the Bloodhounds a 2-1 advantage.

John Jay was not done in the inning as senior Inelza Salcedo registered an RBI ground out. Freshman Nicole Lopez then picked up an RBI single to increase the lead to 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, CSI had first and second with one out. Graepel was able to get two straight ground outs to get out of the inning.

In the seventh, CSI loaded the bases with one out. The guests scored two runs on a hit-by pitch and wild pitch to trail 4-3. With runners on second and third with two outs, freshman Brianna Schmidt made a diving catch over her shoulder to secure the victory for the Bloodhounds.

Graepel threw a complete game and allowed eight hits, two earned runs, and struck out two. She also helped her own cause by going 1-for-2 with a walk, run scored, and stolen base. Rivera finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's and a run. Lopez was 1-for-1 with an RBI and walk.

The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to steady rain. The two teams will meet on Wednesday, April 24, for a single game at 1:00 pm in Staten Island.

The Bloodhounds hosts Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday, April 23, for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 pm at Randall's Island Field 16.
