Men's Volleyball Eliminated by Medgar Evers in Hard Fought Quarterfinals

The men's volleyball team lost to Medgar Evers, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 28-26), on Tuesday night at the Cougar Cove in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds conclude the season with an overall record of 10-19. The Cougars improve to 16-6. 

Freshman Alejandro Gallardo led the offense with a team-high 10 kills, five digs, and two service aces. Junior Krystian Surdel and sophomore Jose Peralta recorded nine and six kills, respectively. Sophomore Anthony Francois notched five kills and a team-high three total blocks. 

Junior Godwin Sequeira registered a team-high six digs and sophomore Dylan Senkiw dished out a team-high 25 assists to go along with five digs and three kills. Sophomore Rintaro Kato added a pair of service aces. 

The first set went back-and-forth as the score was tied 10-10. With the Bloodhounds trailing 13-11, John Jay scored three straight to regain the lead. With the score knotted at 17 apiece, Medgar Evers went on a 4-0 run. Trailing 22-19, the Bloodhounds put together three straight to even the score. The hosts recorded three of the final four points to win the opening set. 

Just like the first, both teams exchanged points in the second set as the score was 12-12. The Bloodhounds went on a 6-0 run but the Cougars responded with five straight points. Trailing 20-19, Medgar Evers ended the period on a 6-3 run to take a 2-0 lead. 

The Bloodhounds held a 9-7 advantage in the third but the Cougars recorded eight of the next nine points. John Jay fought back to tie the score 21-21. Medgar Evers would end up winning the set to advance to the CUNYAC Semifinals. 

John Jay finished with 35 kills, 30 assists, 19 digs, six total blocks, and five service aces. 

This match turned out to be the final one of Michael Chabla's collegiate career. The Athletics Department wishes him the best of luck in the future!
