The men's soccer team lost to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 2-0, in the season opener on Saturday afternoon at Randall's Island.
The Bloodhounds got off to a hot start with junior
Mark Shnadshteyn recording three shots in the first five minutes. The next 25 minutes went back-and-forth with both teams seeing scoring opportunities.
In the 32rd minute, the Mariners tallied the first goal of the game off a cross in the box. They went into half holding a 1-0 advantage. John Jay outshot USMMA by a margin of 6-5.
The Bloodhounds intensified the pressure in the second half but could not find the back of the net. Junior
Steven Towler kept the Bloodhounds in the game with crucial saves including several diving saves. However, the Mariners added an insurance goal in the 80th minute to seal the victory.
Shnadshteyn led the way with a match-high six shots and team-high two shots on goal. Junior
Steven Towler finished with a game-high six saves.
The Bloodhounds hit the road for a non-conference match at Purchase College on Wednesday, September 4, at 6:00 pm.
