The men's soccer team outplayed Maritime on the stats sheet but fell to the Privateers, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in Throggs Neck, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 1-3 on the season. The Privateers improve to 4-3 overall.
John Jay scored the opening goal of the game in the 10th minute when junior
James Haddad slipped one past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season. Sophomore
Andrew DeCanio was credited with the assist.
Maritime responded in the 28th minute to even the score. Both teams went into the half with the score 1-1. John Jay outshot the hosts by a margin of 8-6. Junior
Steven Towler registered three saves in the period.
Fourteen minutes into the second half, the Privateers took their first lead of the contest. They added their third goal six minutes later to lead by two. The Bloodhounds intensified the pressure and capitalized in the 70th minute when DeCanio found the back of the net to cut the deficit to one. Freshman
Samson Marwieh was credited with his first collegiate assist.
John Jay could not find a way to tie the score despite outshooting Maritime 9-4 in the half. DeCanio finished with a match-high five shots and S. Towler recorded four saves.
The Bloodhounds return home for a home match against the University of Valley Forge on Sunday, September 22, at 4:00 pm at Randall's Island Field 10.
