Katie Healy Powers Women's Basketball to Come-From-Behind 83-80 Victory Over Hunter; First Win Against Hawks at the Doghouse Since 2012

In an exciting back-and-forth conference matchup at the Doghouse, the women's basketball team erased a 10-point deficit to overcome Hunter College, 83-80, on Friday evening. The Bloodhounds get back to .500 on the season at 8-8 and improve to 5-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Hawks drop to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

Sophomore Katie Healy dominated on both sides of the ball. The forward finished with her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with a team-high 24 points, season-high and game-high 19 rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Sophomore Lily Rakitzis registered 21 points, three assists, and two steals.

Sophomore Jada Rencher notched her second double-double of the year with 14 points, 11 boards, and a game-high two blocks. Senior All'aha Albright fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior Nyasha Howard dished out a game-high 11 assists to go along with seven points, seven boards, and a game-high four steals.

John Jay opened the first four minutes on an 11-4 run. Trailing by eight, the Hawks scored nine straight to regain. A three-pointer by Rakitzis put the Bloodhounds back ahead 19-17 however Hunter ended the period on a 8-0 run to lead 25-19.

Down by six in the second, Healy and Rencher made back-to-back layups to trim the deficit. With 2:55 left, the visitors led 40-33. The Bloodhounds ended the half scoring six of the last seven points to trail 41-39 after twenty minutes.

Five minutes into the third quarter, Hunter increased its lead to 48-40. Two minutes later, they held a 10-point advantage. Healy, Rakitzis, Howard, and Rencher all made layups to end the period to cut the deficit to 56-54.

Albright opened the fourth with a bucket to even the score at 56 apiece. With just under five minutes left to play, the score was even at 72-72. The Hawks followed with five straight but John Jay would respond right away. Healy sank a tough fadeaway and Howard drained a three-pointer to once again tie the game. Rakitzis and Healy then went a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to take a four-point advantage. The Bloodhounds made tough defensive stands in the final minute to hold on for the huge come-from-behind victory.

John Jay finished 31-for-63 (49.2%) from the field, 4-for-11 (36.4%) from behind the arc, and 17-for-27 (63.0%) from the free-throw line.

The Bloodhounds visit first-place Brooklyn College on Wednesday, January 22, for a conference tilt at 5:00 pm.
