Women's Basketball Erases 18-Point Deficit But Falls in Final Two Minutes at Hunter College; Bloodhounds Host CCNY on Saturday, 2/22, in CUNYAC First Round

In a battle for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming postseason tournament, the women's basketball team stormed back in the third and fourth quarters but lost in the final two minutes to Hunter College, 83-75, on Tuesday evening in New York, NY. The Bloodhounds conclude the regular season at 13-12 and 10-4 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. This is John Jay's most regular season wins and conference wins since the 2012-13 season. The Hawks improve to 15-10 overall and 11-3 in CUNYAC.

Senior All'aha Albright finished with her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 29 points, tying a career-high with 13 rebounds, and three assists. Double-double machine sophomore Katie Healy notched her 12th of the year with 20 points, 13 boards, and a team-high three steals.

Freshman Jada Rencher tallied 13 points and junior Jessica Gorman added eight points. Senior Nyasha Howard recorded nine rebounds, a team-high four assists, a game-high two blocks, and a pair of steals.

The Bloodhounds opened the game scoring nine of the first 12 points. The Hawks followed on a 9-1 run but Albright responded with a three-pointer to put John Jay back up by one. The hosts scored a late basket to lead 23-21 at the end of 10 minutes.

Hunter started the second on a 7-0 run. After Albright made a pair of free-throws, the hosts increased their lead to 34-25. At the half, the Bloodhounds trailed 43-29.

Three minutes into the third, the Hawks increased their advantage to 18. That's when the Bloodhounds went to work. With 3:09 remaining in the quarter, Albright made a layup to cut the deficit to 10. Heading into the final period, Hunter led 64-54.

Trailing 67-56, the Bloodhounds stormed back on an 11-0 run capped off with a jumper by Rencher to even the score. The Hawks went back up by three but Healy answered by sinking a three-pointer with 3:47 left to go.

Down by one, Hunter went on a 6-0 run but Healy converted on a layup to trim the deficit to 75-73. However, the Hawks scored the final five points of the contest to secure the second seed in the tournament.

John Jay finished 27-for-65 (41.5%) from the field, 5-for-22 (22.7%) from behind the arc, and 16-for-22 (72.7%) from the free-throw line.
