FLUSHING, NY -- The men's soccer team earned a hard fought victory over York College, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at College Point Field. The Bloodhounds improve to 2-7 (1-2 in CUNYAC) overall while the Cardinals fall to 1-4-1 (1-2 in CUNYAC) on the season.
The hosts got on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. Approximately five minutes later, the Bloodhounds responded when freshman
Maksym Ivanov found a loose ball and buried it past the goalkeeper for his fifth of the season. The score was tied at one apiece after forty-five minutes of play. John Jay outshot the Cardinals by a margin of 12-11. Sophomore
Jesus Perez made a pair of saves in the period.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, John Jay was awarded a penalty kick and
Kevin Luciano was selected to take it. The freshman buried it into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal and to give John Jay a 2-1 lead. In the 74th minute, freshman
Justin Gharbin tallied his first of his collegiate career to add to the Bloodhounds' lead. Ninty second later, Ivanov added his second strike of the day and his team-leading sixth of the season to put John Jay ahead by three.
The Cardinals added a late goal but John Jay held on for their first conference victory of the season. Perez picked up the win after making four saves.
The Bloodhounds continue CUNYAC play when they host the Medgar Evers Cougars on Friday, October 8, at 3:30 pm at Randall's Island 83.
