NEW YORK, NY -- The women's basketball team kicked off the 2021-22 season with a 70-61 victory over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Wednesday night at the Doghouse. This was the first victory for the women's basketball team in exactly 599 days. The Bloodhounds move to 1-0 on the young season, while the Engineers fall to 0-2 on the year.
RPI scored the first bucket of the game to take a 2-0 lead, but John Jay quickly answered with baskets from senior
Victoria Brown and freshman
Ashley Zeolla to gain a 4-2 edge. That first basket would turn out to be the Engineers only lead of the game, as the Bloodhounds did not trail the rest of the way. John Jay's lead grew to as large as 16 late in the fourth, and the Bloodhounds eventually held on to win by nine.
Brown scored a game-high 28 points in the victory, and added five rebounds. Zeolla and junior
Bobbi Green also cracked double-figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Zeolla also collected a team-high nine rebounds, while Green had a game-high four steals. Freshman
Ayanna Edwards scored seven points and dished out a game-high five assists.
John Jay hits the road for the first time this season this weekend, and will travel to Patchogue. NY for a non-conference game against SJC Long Island. The game will be on Saturday, November 13 at 1 p.m.
