Cyan Scott was tested early but definitely brought her 'A' game. Five minutes in, Scott made a beautiful kick save on a Lightning breakaway to keep the game scoreless. A few minutes later, the keeper made back-to-back saves off a corner kick.
In the 22nd minute, Lehman was awarded a penalty kick. Scott came up with a huge save as the game remained 0-0. Once the Bloodhounds settled in, John Jay intensified the pressure to close out the half.
After forty-five minutes of play, neither team found the back of the net. John Jay led in shots by a margin of 7-5. Scott made five saves in the period.
The Bloodhounds came out strong to begin the second half. John Jay hit three posts or crossbars in the first 15 minutes. With less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation, John Jay was awarded a free-kick right outside the box. Freshman
Brooke Fontaine took the kick and blasted it right over the keeper's arms into the top right corner to give the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead.
John Jay buckled down on the defense and limited the remaining Lehman scoring opportunities. The Lightning had a late push but the Bloodhounds' stellar defense made huge stops to hold on for the 1-0 shutout as John Jay has now won two straight CUNYAC Championships.
For her efforts, Fontaine was named the Championship's MVP.
The Bloodhounds will now await word on their seeding in the NCAA Division III Tournament. This will be their second straight appearance as a program. The selection show is on Monday, November 8, at 1:00 pm on the NCAA DIII website.
