NEW YORK, NY -- The women's basketball team earned a 72-64 victory over the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders on Tuesday evening at the Doghouse. With the win, John Jay improves to 5-5 on the year and is now back to .500, while Rutgers-Newark falls to 3-7 on the season.
The Bloodhounds used a very strong defensive first half to take a 15-point lead into the locker room at the break. The Scarlet Raiders made a push spanning late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to as low as five points, but John Jay held on thanks to huge performances from juniors
Katie Healy and
Bobbi Green, as well as freshman
Ayanna Edwards.
Healy narrowly missed out on the second 20-20 game of her career, collecting 24 points, 19 rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Green double-doubled for the second time as a Bloodhound, and reached the 20-10 mark for the first time, scoring a career-high 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Edwards was also in double-figures, finishing with 15 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Freshman
Ashley Nieves added six points while freshman
Jordyn Ruiz chipped in five rebounds and four assists.
John Jay has the next couple weeks off for the holidays before returning to the Doghouse to host its CUNYAC opener on Tuesday, January 4 against Brooklyn College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and it can be streamed via
