Katie Healy Leads Women's Soccer to Victory over Sarah Lawrence in Home Opener

NEW YORK, NY -- The women's soccer team defeated the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons, 4-1, on Wednesday evening in the squad's home opener at Randall's Island. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Gryphons drop to 3-2.

John Jay dominated the first half of the match on both sides of the ball. The Bloodhound defense allowed only one shot through the first 45 minutes, which allowed the offense to find a good rhythm. Junior Katie Healy found the back of the net first in the 17th minute off a beautiful feed from sophomore Jillian Golden. John Jay would extend its lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute when Healy found senior Kimberly Robledo who snuck the ball past the Gryphon goalkeeper.

The second half was more even, however the Bloodhounds were able to fend off Sarah Lawrence for the majority of the period. In the 48th minute, Golden scored her first goal of the game which put John Jay in front 3-0, but Sarah Lawrence quickly answered with a goal to cut the lead to 3-1. Healy scored her second goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 59th minute, which would ultimately be the dagger as John Jay coasted to a 4-1 victory.

The Bloodhounds outshot the Gryphons 18-9 in the match, and also held an advantage in corners 3-2. Healy was the star of the show for John Jay, totaling two goals and an assist. Golden also had a goal and an assist in the game. Graduate Student Cyan Scott had five saves in goal for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay will return to the field on Saturday, September 18, as the squad will welcome Cedar Crest College to Randall's Island to close out a two-game homestand. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
