Women's Tennis Advances To CUNYAC/HSS Semifinals After Edging No. 5 Lehman On Sunday

Flushing/Bronx, NY - It was a back-and-forth tilt between the No. 4 John Jay women's tennis team and the No. 5 seeded Lehman College Lightning as the match was ultimately decided at No. 2 singles in favor of the Bloodhounds, who posted a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the Bloodhounds improve to 5-9 on the season while Lehman concludes the year at 2-8.

Prior to the start of the match, John Jay honored their two seniors in Kenya Kissoon and Rafaella Rybalko for Senior Day!

The rain was coming down at the USTA National Tennis Center, but it didn't deter John Jay, who jumped out to an early 2-1 advantage.

The tandem of Sarina Moi and Kenya Kissoon cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 2 play over Mary Grande and Effie Pang. The Bloodhounds went ahead 2-0 after Dakota Himaya and Cindy Liguicota bested Charlee Stallings and Shelby Gonzalez at No. 3, 8-1.

Lehman's Viola Avdyl and Caroline Lopez secured an 8-3 victory at No. 1 to put the Lightning on the board.

Weather played a factor and following an approximately 30 minute delay, the decision for singles to be played was moved to Gotham Stadium Tennis in the Bronx.

Himaya earned a 6-3; 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles to put the Bloodhounds up by a 3-1 score.

Avdyl and Pang brought Lehman back into the match, as Avdyl earned a 6-0; 6-1 triumph at No. 1 over Moi while Pang defeated Mia Sorrentino, 6-1; 6-2, at No. 4 to even the match at 3-3.

Kissoon continued to enjoy her Senior Day, picking up a 6-1; 6-2 victory over Gonzalez at No. 5 that gave the Bloodhounds a 4-3 edge.

Stallings forced a deciding match as she got past Liguicota, 6-1; 6-2 at No. 6 as both teams were tied at 4-4.

Rybalko and Lopez were pitted against one another at No.2. Both competitors rallied at different points of the match, but Rybalko was able to pick up a 6-4 first set win.

The two continued to trade points in the second set until Rybalko thwarted a rally by Lopez, earning a 7-6 triumph as John Jay held on for the victory.

The Bloodhounds will be back on the courts on Tuesday, October 25 as they will face off against the top-seed Hunter at the USTA National Tennis Center.

First-serve is set for 1:00 p.m. The winner of the Hunter/John Jay matchup will take on the winner of the No. 2 Baruch/No. 3 Brooklyn contest on October 27 at the USTA National Tennis Center.
