New York, NY - The No. 4 seeded John Jay men's soccer team controlled the tempo of their 2022 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) quarterfinal fixture against the No. 5 seed CCNY, as the Bloodhounds defeated the Beavers, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Randall's Island - Field 83.
With the win, John Jay moves to 5-10-2 overall on the year and will now take on the top-seed Baruch in the semifinals on Saturday, October 29 from New Rochelle, NY at Flowers Park. The Beavers conclude their season with a 3-8-1 overall record.
CCNY got the match started with a few chances as Erik Jimenez and Adrian Montalvan each challenged Bloodhounds goalkeeper,
Tyler Solis, who was able to make the stop on both attempts.
John Jay got on the board first as
Jonathan Granados was able to head the ball past Mikhael Torres after receiving the feed from
Michael Fernandez as the Bloodhounds went ahead, 1-0.
The Bloodhounds wasted little time in netting their second goal of the game, as
Kevin Luciano intercepted that pass and rocketed on to the upper left corner of the net, increasing John Jay's lead to 2-0.
Lamarana Diallo nearly gave the Bloodhounds a three-goal advantage but his shot ricocheted off the post in the 18th minute.
John Jay would ultimately find that third goal in the 31st minute. Luciano rocketed a shot that deflected off a CCNY defender and gave the Bloodhounds a corner kick. Luciano stepped up and sent the ball into the box which was settled by
Hans Merilan, who was able to beat Torres as John Jay went ahead, 3-0.
CCNY found the right combination and was rewarded in the 58th minute as Geovany Oblea headed the ball past Solis after getting the pass from Yusuf Abdelmegid to cut the lead down to 3-1.
John Jay delivered the final shot of the contest, as
Justin Gharbin was able to corral the loose ball after CCNY failed to clear the ball as Gharbin had a wide-open net and didn't miss it.
