New York, NY – The John Jay men's soccer team registered its second shutout of the season, as the Bloodhounds defeated York College, 4-0, on Wednesday afternoon in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action.
With the win, John Jay has now won back-to-back matches while improving to 3-8 on the season and 2-0 in conference play while the Cardinals falter to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
"This was a team victory that required focus and 100 percent composure from the very first minute," commented head coach
Zade Haobsh.
"Our team was able to perform in all facets of the match and was especially thrilled that we were able to record our second clean sheet of the year. All of our focus now shifts to our match on Saturday against Medgar Evers."
John Jay got off to a fast start in the opening minutes of the match as the Bloodhounds were given a corner kick on the far side of the field. Sophomore forward
Kevin Luciano sent the ball into the box that sophomore
Jonathan Granados was able to outleap his defender and execute a well-time header that beat York's Ahmed Algendy, for a 1-0 John Jay lead.
For the Brooklyn, NY native in Granados, it marked his first collegiate goal while Luciano records his team-tying second assist of the year.
The Bloodhounds threatened for more in the 19th minute as sophomore defender Dominique Murphy had a chance on the left side but Ahmed Algendy was able to make the stop.
John Jay continued to mount their offense, testing Algendy on three straight attempts. Freshman midfielder and two-time CUNYAC Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week,
Brayan Alvarez, sent a chance that was stopped by Algendy on the left side.
Three minutes later, sophomore forward
Justin Gharbin sent a header that found the waiting arms of Algendy. The Brooklyn, NY native would have a second chance from point-blank range, but Algendy was able to make the one-hand stop in the 27th minute.
York's best chance came in the 34th minute as Stanley Sanchez was able to find space but his chance was thwarted by sophomore
Tyler Solis.
John Jay closed out the first half with a 12-5 advantage in shot attempts while Algendy made six saves in the opening 45 minutes to Solis' four.
When play resumed for the second, John Jay continued where they left off. The Bloodhounds drew a foul on a York as Alvarez stepped up to take the free kick. The Queens, NY native was put a good right-footed strike on the ball that snuck past the defense and into the back right of the goal, giving the home team a 2-0 edge.
For Alvarez, it marked his team-leading third goal of the season.
Four minutes later, John Jay continued with their offensive flurry. Sophomore defender
Andrew Santos put a good boot on the ball but his chance was denied by Algendy. Junior forward
Michael Fernandez had his shot blocked, as did teammate
Lamarana Diallo, but the junior forward

The final tally for John Jay came with six minutes left in the contest as
Justin Gharbin was able to finish off the give-and-go with
Damian Coronel as the Bloodhounds upped its lead to 4-0 and held on to win by that mark.
For the former Cristo Rey Brooklyn standout Gharbin, it marked his second goal of the season while Coronel registered his first collegiate helper.
The Bloodhounds will look for their third straight CUNYAC win on Saturday, October 8, as they will travel to Brooklyn to square off against Medgar Evers. Kickoff from Prospect Park Parade Grounds | Field 8 is slated for 4:00 p.m.
