NEW YORK, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball defeated #6 Lehman College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-11), on Tuesday night at the Doghouse in the opening round of the CUNYAC Championships. The Bloodhounds improve to 14-13 on the season, while the Lightning finish the 2022 campaign with a 6-16 record.
The first set began with fireworks as sophomore
Faith Harer smacked a monster kill to ignite the home crowd and set the tone for the rest of the match. The Lightning kept it within reach, with the Bloodhounds only having a slight 17-15 edge late in the set. However, from that point John Jay would score eight of the next nine points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set showed the toughness this Bloodhound group has gained throughout this 2022 season, as they were in a 23-20 hole and close to having Lehman tie up the match. However, a kill from sophomore
Paige Sadowitz ignited a 5-0 run which was capped by a kill from senior
Catharine Fleming helping John Jay come from behind and steal set two.
The momentum gained from the end of set two, along with a fired up Doghouse crowd, was all John Jay needed to coast to an easy third set victory. John Jay won in commanding fashion, 25-11, to put the finishing touches on the match and advance to the CUNYAC Semifinals.
Sophomore
Amanda Marte had a match-high seven kills, along with a team-high nine digs to lead John Jay. Harer had a solid all-around game, chipping in six kills, four digs, and a match-high five service aces. Sophomore
Meghan Smith has a match-high 21 assists, with four kills, and five digs. Sadowitz colelcted four kills along with three solo blocks. Sophomore
Johnelle Pierre also had four kills.
The Bloodhounds will square off against #2 Brooklyn College in the CUNYAC Semifinals on Thursday, November 3 in Brooklyn, NY. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
