Women's Basketball Search For Third Straight Win Halted By Gwynedd Mercy On Saturday

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team held a three-point lead after the first quarter but the visiting Gwynedd Mercy Griffins outscored the Bloodhounds over the final three frames, as John Jay fell 84-62 on Saturday afternoon at The Doghouse.
 
With today's result, the Bloodhounds fall to 6-5 overall while the Griffins move to 7-2. John Jay is now 0-2 all-time against Gwynedd Mercy. 
 
Three Bloodhounds scored in double-digits, led by senior forward Katie Healy, who registered her 53rd career double-double, finishing with a team-leading 15 points to go along with 13 rebounds. The Merrick, NY native also dished out four assists while swatting away two shots in her 36 minutes of action. 
 
Junior Tiffany Bogle netted a career-high 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field in 25 minutes of play. Sophomore guard Jordyn Ruiz chipped in 10 points and recorded three steals. 
 
Bobbi Green added seven points, eight rebounds while matching Healy with four assists and tied Ruiz with three steals. 
 
Freshman Natalie Simonds provided the Bloodhounds with a spark off the bench, scoring seven points in eight minutes of action. 
 
Three Griffins finished in double-figures as Haley Crossley and Elise Sylvester each topped the 20-point plateau, finishing with 23 and 22 points, respectively, on a combined 14 of 31 from the field and going 15 of 19 from the free-throw line. 
 
Crossley registered a double-double in the win for Gwynedd Mercy, grabbing 15 rebounds while also dishing out five assist in her 30 minutes of play. 
 
John Jay opened the contest on a 10-4 run over the first four minutes of the contest, as Bogle had four of the ten points as the Bloodhounds converted 5 of their first eight shots and held the Griffins to a 2 of 6 start. 
 
The visitors started to stage their comeback attempt, outscoring the Bloodhounds, 11-8, over the final 5:30, with John Jay holding a 18-15 lead as Ruiz was able to covert on right-handed layup off the feed from Chayanne Kelly with 15 seconds remaining in the quarter. 
 
Gwynedd Mercy opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to grab their first lead of the contest, 21-18, thanks to a three-pointer from Lynzie Eggers at the 8:19 mark. 
 
The mini burst by the visitors was part of a larger 14-2 run over a 3:20 span that saw Gwynedd Mercy take a 29-20 lead, as Cayla Sharkey paced the visitors with six points. 
 
Both teams would struggle to find their range from the field, until Crossley was able to put in two on a layup that made it 31-22 with 4:34 showing on the game clock. 
 
The Bloodhounds scored nine of the final 14 points of the quarter but trailed by five, 36-31, as they limited the visitors to just one made field in seven chances over the final 3:50. 
 
The Griffins seized control of the momentum to open the third quarter, opening the quarter on a 15-4 run in taking a 51-35 as the visitors limited the Bloodhounds to just two made field goals over the near five-minute stretch. 
 
The Bloodhounds responded with a 11-2 run of their own over a quick two-minute span, as Simonds served as the catalyst, netting all seven of her points, as John Jay closed the gap to seven, 53-46, with 2:05 left after Healy was able to knock down the mid-range jumper. 
 

 
Sylvester completed the three-point play from the line that pushed the lead back to 12, 58-46.
 
Gwynedd Mercy outscored the Bloodhounds 13-9 over the next five minutes to build up a 71-55 lead after Eggers hit on a pair from the free-throw line. 
 
The visitors closed out the contest scoring 13 of the final 20 points to preserve the victory. 
 
Both teams grabbed 44 rebounds in the contest with John Jay holding a slim edge on the defensive glass, 33-31. 
 
John Jay will be back on the court on Friday, December 30 when they begin a two-game road trip, commencing at Ramapo. 
 
Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
