Career-Highs From Chayanne Kelly And Gillian Powell Paces Women's Basketball To First CUNYAC Victory In Wire-To-Wire Triumph Over CCNY

Three Bloodhounds finish in double-digits, led by Kelly's 20-point outing

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team commenced CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play with a 86-48 home triumph over the CCNY Beavers on Saturday afternoon from The Doghouse. 
 
The Bloodhounds move to 5-4 (1-0 CUNYAC) on the year while the Beavers fall to 2-4 (0-1 CUNYAC). 
 
"After setting the tone early, our bench played a pivotal role in not only maintaining the lead but helping it grow," commented head coach Lynda Day. "We had great performances today from Gillian (Powell), who run the floor well and crashed the boards in setting a career-day. Additionally, Chayanne had a balanced and great afternoon, setting a career-high in scoring while helping out in all facets of the contest." 
 
Three John Jay players finished in double-figures, led by sophomore guard Chayanne Kelly, who netted a career-high 20 points on an efficient 7 of 11 shooting from the field. The Harlem, NY native dished out five assists and grabbed five rebounds while swiping four steals in her 28 minutes of action. 
 
Gillian Powell registered her first career double-double, pouring in a career-highs with 16 points on 8 of 11 shooting and corralling a team-leading 14 rebounds, nine coming on the defensive end, in 22 minutes of play. 
 
Veteran Bloodhounds guard Bobbi Green was the third player in double-digits, as she concluded the contest with 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting while matching Kelly with four steals and rejecting two shots. 
 
Anna Vikatos and Monae Laing paced the visitors, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively, on a combined 8 of 22 shooting from the floor. Laing finished with a double-double collecting 16 rebounds in 35 minutes of play. 
 
John Jay opened up the contest on a 10-0 as Tiffany Bogle netted six of the first ten points for the home team. Katie Healy chipped in four points as the Bloodhounds hit on 5 of their first eight attempts. 
 
Over the final 4:16 of the first quarter, the Bloodhounds outscored the Beavers, 14-7, while connecting on 60.0 percent shooting from the floor and limiting the visitors to just two made field goals in three chances in taking a 26-7 lead. 
 
The Beavers narrowed the gap in the second quarter, outscoring the Bloodhounds, 14-10, over six minutes with John Jay still holding a 36-21 advantage. 
 
The home team increased its lead back to 23 after closing out the quarter on an 11-3 spurt as Jordyn Ruiz hit on a layup with 14 seconds showing as John Jay took a 47-24 halftime lead. 
 
The Bloodhounds continued to find their rhythm, closing out the third quarter on a 13-2 run, holding the visitors to just one made bucket in eight chances and increasing their lead to 31, 67-36, as Kelly was able to drill a three-point from the wing. 
 
John Jay closed out the contest by scoring 19 of the game's final 29 points in posting their first conference victory of the season. 
 
The Bloodhounds shot a season-high 52.2 percent from the field (36 of 69) while recording a season-best in points (86), field goals made (36), and assists (25). 
 
John Jay was a +9 on the boards, outmuscling the Beavers 42-32 on the boards. The Bloodhounds converted 29 points off 25 CCNY mishaps. 
 
The Bloodhounds return to action on Monday, December 5 as they welcome Rutgers-Newark to the Doghouse. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM.
