MADISON, NJ -- The baseball team kicked off its 2022 season on Tuesday afternoon, but came up just short on the road against FDU-Florham, 4-3, in eight innings. John Jay falls to 0-1 on the season, while the Devils improve to 3-0 on the year.
The Bloodhounds trailed 3-0 after four innings, but came alive in the top of the fifth. After a double by freshman
Anthony Agosta and two walks to load the bases, freshman
David Michalski came up clutch with a bases clearing double to center to tie the game. The Devils answered, however, with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning and took a 4-3 lead into the final frame. John Jay had the go-ahead run on base in the eighth inning, but was unable to scratch any runs across and the Devils held on for the win.
Michalski accounted for all three runs batted in for John Jay. Sophomore
Michael Manzoeillo and freshman
Ethan Simaan also had doubles. Agosta was the lone Bloodhound with a two-hit game.
Freshman
Matthew Brennan got settled with the loss despite going 2.2 innings and allowing just one hit, wth the one hit being the go-ahead homer. Sophomore
Preston Reitz started and went rwo innings and gave up just one earned run. Freshman
Marc Weeks chucked 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and two earned runs.
John Jay will return to the diamond on Saturday, February 26 for a contest against Old Westbury at Baseball heaven in Yaphank, NY. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
