NEW YORK, NY -- The No. 2 women's basketball team fought valiantly, but ultimately came up just short, losing to No. 1 Brooklyn College, 59-51, in the CUNYAC Championship on Friday evening at Nat Holman Gymnasium. John Jay ends the 2021-22 campaign with a 16-8 record.
Juniors
Katie Healy and
Bobbi Green were both named to the CUNYAC All-Tournament Team, the conference announced following the completion of the game.
The game did not start as planned, as the Bloodhounds only scored six points in the first quarter and trailed by double-digits after Brooklyn drilled a three-pointer on the first possession of the second quarter. John Jay didn't get this far to just lay down and quit, however, as the Bloodhounds fought tirelessly the rest of the way to get back into the game. After trailing by 13 points at halftime, a quick 6-2 Bloodhound run to open the third quarter, capped by four straight points from freshman
Ashley Zeolla, cut the deficit to single digits. John Jay cut it down to five points after a layup from freshman
Jordyn Ruiz, but the lead grew back to eight for Brooklyn by the end of the third quarter. The Bloodhounds got within six points on two different occasions in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs started to pull away thanks to a 6-0 run late in the quarter. A late three-pointer from junior
Brianna Platia gave the Bloodhounds life, but Brooklyn held on for the win and was crowned champion.
Green was the leading scorer for the Bloodhounds, pouring in 17 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out six assists. Healy also reached double-figures, scoring 10 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Zeolla just missed a double-double, totaling nine points and nine rebounds. Freshmen
Ayanna Edwards and Ruiz had six points each.
This marked John Jay's first CUNYAC Championship appearance since 1996, and that is something to be proud of for the entire program. The athletics department once again would like to congratulate the entire team for its accomplishments this season, and wishes the senior class the best of luck in the future!
